Introduction
to PERL Programming
The University of Pitt-Bradford has brought an 18-hour Perl program to
Coudersport, hosted by the Potter County Education Council.
Perl is a stable, cross platform programming language. It
is an interpreted language optimized for scanning arbitrary text
files, extracting information from those text files, and
printing reports based on that information. It's also a good
language for many system management tasks.
The language is intended to be practical (easy to use,
efficient, complete) rather than beautiful (tiny, elegant,
minimal). It combines some of the best features of C, sed, awk,
and sh, so people familiar with those languages should have
little difficulty with it. (Language historians will also note
some vestiges of csh, Pascal, and even BASIC PLUS.) Expression
syntax corresponds quite closely to C expression syntax. If you
have a problem that would ordinarily use sed or awk or sh, but
it exceeds their capabilities or must run a little faster, and
you don't want to write the silly thing in C, then Perl may be
for you. There are also translators to turn your sed and awk
scripts into Perl scripts. Perl is used for mission-critical
projects in the public and private sectors and is widely used to
program web applications of all needs.
Topics that will be covered in the course will be: Scalar Data;
Lists and Arrays; Subroutines; Hashes; I/O Basics; Concepts of
Regular Expressions; More About Regular Expressions; More
Control Structures; File Handles and File Tests; Directory
Operations; Manipulating Files and Directories; Process
Management; Strings and Sorting; and Simple Databases.

Opportunity Knocks (OK) is the focus of Potter County Education Council's Earmark Grant, and fits specifically to PCEC's goals and mission. This program is designed to assist a select group of single parents, teen parents, and homemakers in acquiring skills needed to enter the workforce at higher income levels. This program will be run by Potter County Education Council (PCEC), with referrals and resource assistance from area agencies: i.e., WIA programs (Career Link,
SPOC, etc.), Assistance Office, Human Services Agency. Though this is a one-year start-up grant, PCEC plans to apply for additional funding to help polish the program, building on the experience of year one, and developing a plan for sustainability beyond year two.
Beekeeping Short Course
The Bee School starts off with the fundamentals: the beehive,
smokers, hive tools, veils, gloves, and protective clothing.
Just as important, students will also explore bee biology,
management issues, and bee pests. One of the most important
aspects of beekeeping today is bee pests and diseases. If you
don't understand these pests and their control, considerable
sums of money can be lost. Before placing your time and money
into beekeeping, know what is needed and the potential pitfalls. The
workshop is sponsored by PCEC and Penn State Cooperative
Extension.
"Let's Talk Sang" Ginseng Production Workshop

This seminar will provide the necessary information to start
and run a small food product business, especially directed to
individuals or groups who will be making and packaging their
products for resale through grocery stores, farm markets,

workshop is sponsored by PCEC and Penn State Cooperative
Extension.

This 3-hour ServSafe workshop was created to meet the needs of
non-profits in the area (i.e. churches, fire companies,
ambulance associations, rotaries, etc.) Although this workshop
is not required by law, it is highly recommended for liability
purposes. At the end of this 3-hour workshop, a certificate will
be issued for you to display at your next event. The
workshop is sponsored by PCEC and Penn State Cooperative
Extension.
