Personal Enrichment Workshops

Below is a listing of personal enrichment workshops that are either currently being offered at the PCEC or have been offered in the past. Please consult the newsletter to see what courses are currently being offered or call us to inquire about a course if you do not currently see it scheduled.  If there is something you would like to learn but hasn't been offered, please call or email us and we'll check into offering the subject.

Herbal First Aid
During this workshop, attendees  will build a basic first aid cupboard using herbals. It is designed for those with little or no knowledge of herbs. Areas covered include: Building your first aid kit; Basic terms used in herbalism; Plant profiles that include actions, properties, and traditional uses; Minor disorders such as sprains, minor cuts, and rashes and traditional herbs used to treat them. If time allows, plant materials used in the first aid cupboard will be discussed in depth as well as some formulas for salves, oils and liniments. 


Herb Classes
Learn a brief history of herbalism, common herbs, herbal preparation, herbal first aid, herbs for common ailments, herbal cosmetics and cleaning, and popular herb trends. Topics covered will be: Brief History of Herbalism; Common Herbs; Herbal Preparation; Herbal First Aid; Herbs for Common Ailments; Herbal Cosmetics/Cleaning; and Popular Herbal Trends.


Gardening Workshops
Many gardening workshops have been featured in the past including Winter Gardening Tips, Perennials, Mother's Day Color Pot Workshop; Memorial Day Container Gardens; Shrubs; Introduction to Ivy Topiary; Creating Dish Gardens; and A Winter Break (Planning for the Growing Season).


Introduction to Italian Conversation
This course provides a review of basic grammatical concepts in Italian to help build a framework for conversational skills. Various mediums are incorporated in order to provide students with a general knowledge of Italian culture and history.


Overview of the World of Antiques & Collectibles
This introductory seminar covers the history of collecting, basic identification, valuation, and liquidation of antiques and collectibles, and ethical practices in the business. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary.


Landscaping 101
Are you jealous of your neighbor's brilliantly landscaped grounds? Do you turn green with envy when you drive by lush green parks with immaculate landscaping? This is the course for you! This beginners landscaping course will show you the ins and outs of landscape design, how to choose and install plant material, and the basics of building landscape beds.

 

Learn to Buy and Sell on eBay
Learn about eBay - the world's largest online community of buyers and sellers. It's the place to buy what you want, sell what you have, and make a few friends while you're at it. We'll help you register and set up your eBay and Paypal accounts, cover the basics of searching, buying and paying for your items, easily and confidently. You'll learn how to create a seller's account, list an item, accept online payments and keep track of all your selling activity on your own.


Advanced eBay Sellers Workshop
Learn to sell more effectively with this advanced eBay Sellers Workshop. This class has been designed specifically for those who already possess basic eBay selling skills and want to do more! This workshop will help you hone your eBay selling skills and teach you to create descriptions that will attract more viewers to your listings. If you've ever wanted to become a more serious eBay seller, this class is for you!


Digital Camera Basics
This workshop will tell you what you need to know before you buy a digital camera. There are a lot of great reasons to make the shift from traditional film cameras to digital cameras. When you decide to join the digital revolution, there are some basics we'll outline to help you understand the advantages of digital photography, we'll explain the buzzwords, as well as give you tips on the supplies you need to produce the pictures you want.


Digital Photography
Digital cameras can be easy to use but confusing to learn. What are all these controls, buttons, knobs, dials, features and functions for? How can I take better photographs? How can I transfer my images from my camera to my computer? What do I do with them now? This course is designed to answer all these questions and more.


The Fundamentals of Cake Decorating
Learn the fundamentals of cake decorating, icing, bags, cake preparation, essentials, coloring techniques, decorating tips and tools, making roses and figure piping. All necessary supplies are included in the class fee.


Let's Play Dolls
Come and embark on a journey of fun and creativity. Using a pre-formed doll body, a variety of materials and lots of imagination, you will create a doll of your choice. Samples and directions for making an angel, fairy or welcome witch will be given but you may be inspired to dress your doll in your own way. It is not necessary to be an experienced doll maker to enjoy the physical and emotional pleasures of "playing dolls." 

Astronomy Classes
Have you always thought about going up to Cherry Springs to see the Milky Way and the billions and billions of stars? The PCEC and DCNR have partnered to provide various astronomy workshops to help you and your family enjoy the wonderful resource of the Dark Sky Park that we have right here in Potter County. The PCEC has held numerous astronomy classes including:

  -  Viewing the Night Sky
  -  Aliens and Off-World Life Forms: Is
      Anyone Out There?
Astronomy courses are offered during the same week as the Stars N Parks programs at Cherry Springs State Park. These courses are free and will prepare interested attendees  for viewing at Cherry Springs.

American Genealogy
Wondering about those who came before you - where they lived and what life may have been like for them? This class will show you how to conduct a search for your family's history "back to the boat." Record more than just dates and names. Topics covered include: How to prepare for your search; What forms are available and how to use them; What types of information are available; Where to find records; How to evaluate the evidence from the records; How to organize your project; and more. 


Write Your Own Children's Book Workshop
This 6-hour workshop for adults will teach you how to structure and develop a children's story. You'll compare writing styles of published authors and then make the creative decisions as the author of your own children's book. Take a story from an idea to your own hardback book. No experience is necessary, only a desire to create and learn.


"Book College" (for young people)
Book College is a writing camp for students entering 3rd grade through 12th grade. If your child is interested in writing, this is the perfect way for them to spend a week! Each child will plan, write and illustrate his/her own book, resulting in a beautiful, hard-bound keepsake for them to take with them following the camp. Make your own story, draw your own pictures - take an idea cover to cover as the author of your very own children's book. Create a treasure that will last forever!
