The
Potter County Education Council was pleased to again host
workshops from noted futurist Rick Smyre, president of
Communities of the Future, Gastonia, North Carolina. Smyre is
an internationally recognized futurist with many years of
experience working with rural communities through the United
States as well as other countries.
The Coudersport office of the Potter County Education Council
was the setting for Mr. Smyre's latest workshops. A full day
workshop took place on August 22, 2005. This workshop,
entitled "Future Contexts for Leaders," was attended
by several dedicated area leaders. Specifically geared toward
individuals who had attended one of his workshops last
November, this 6-hour workshop expanded on the ideas Mr. Smyre
presented in his introductory workshop, "The Creative
Knowledge Economy."

On
August 23, Smyre continued to meet with area residents and
community leaders, introducing them to the emerging
"Creative Knowledge Economy" and discussing its
importance to the economic growth of rural areas. He promotes
the need for new approaches to economic development, education,
and governance and the need to connect to continuous innovation
with a broadband electronic infrastructure. Smyre also
challenged participants to explore transformational leadership
and lifelong learning and shared his ideas of megatrends and
"weak signals" and what they might mean to rural
communities.
